Coney Island Emporium makes its mark.
It
takes a lot to cause a stir in Las Vegas, but the grand opening
of the Coney Island Emporium and the New York, New York Hotel
& Casino at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Tropicana
Ave. accomplished that feat Jan. 2 with a black-tie VIP celebration
followed by the official public opening Jan. 3.
The hotel project of MGM Grand
Inc., features 12 towers depicting various landmarks in New
York City plus an 84,000-square-foot casino, 2,038 hotel rooms,
and the one-of-a-kind Coney Island Emporium FEC. The hotel
lobby is a miniature Central Park complete with trees and
a wishing well.
Coney Island Emporium was created
and designed by Amusement Consultants of New Rochelle, N.Y.,
the family entertainment experts who currently operate 44
facilities in 12 states. The company, which also operates
the Skybound Arcade at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino,
now has an office in Las Vegas.
The festivities drew local
officials and thousands of visitors who waited patiently for
a turn to sample the attractions. Amusement Consultant
principals Michael Getlan, Mel Getlan, and Ron Getlan revealed
that the 32,000-square-foot themed FEC took 16 months in the
planning, design, and construction phases after the concept
was solidified. All of the attractions
